Gynecomastia is a condition of over-developed or enlarged breasts in men, and is common in men of any age. It can be the result of hereditary conditions, hormonal changes, diseases or the use of certain medications or drugs.

Gynecomastia is a benign condition that studies have shown affects up to 30 percent of men. It most often occurs in prepubescent boys, but can affect males of all ages. The condition is characterized by dense or fibrous breast tissue that does not diminish after puberty. Due to technological advances, men can now safely and effectively have this condition corrected with minimal scarring utilizing liposuction techniques. The American Society of Plastic Surgery reported that in 2001 more than 1850 men had male breast reduction surgery.

Gynecomastia can cause emotional discomfort and impair your self confidence. Some males may even avoid certain physical activities simply to hide their condition. It is characterized by excess localized fat or glandular breast tissue or a combination of both. I may be bilateral (both breasts) or unilateral (one breast).

Surgery for gynecomastia is best performed on men whose condition cannot be corrected through alternative medical treatments and whose general health is good. They should be non-smoking with realistic expectations.

Dr. Walker performs this procedure as same day surgery, either asleep (general anesthesia) or with light sedation with tumescent local anesthesia. The decision is made at the time of consultation between the patient and the doctor.

After the surgery, the chest is wrapped. The patient goes home and instructed to participate in minimal activity. The area is unwrapped 1 to 2 days later and the patient can shower. Some compression continues for several weeks. Results are immediate and continue to improve over months.
